The Flood (Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans), 2007.

Manzanita, Cocobolo, Black Thread

13.5" H x 11" W

Though it comes across as a natural form, Laurie carefully carved the sharp points to create the jagged edges of the piece.  She carved the boat from within the wood.  The mast break was accidental; but she kept it as a fitting visual representation of the perseverance of the Hurricane Katrina devastation a year after its physical end.
